Greek trademarks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by the each organization to protect the integrity and ownership of their respected property including their crests, coats of arms, organization name and Greek letters as well as any other insignia specific to the organization. The actual National or International organization holds exclusive trademark rights and not an individual member within the Fraternity or Sorority. A common misconception is that some individuals feel that because they are a member of said group, they have the rights to use trademarked property for their own use. This is incorrect.

In the late 80’s, college Fraternal organizations began the process of banding together to develop a system to help protect their names and have control over what is being distributed to their members. This movement to support the growth of the Greek community and protect their image, reputation, as well as their fundamental mission was the birth of today’s Greek Licensing program. The goal of Greek Licensing is to provide a diversity of high quality products and services at a reasonable price while helping maintain the consistent use of trademarks and certain quality control standards.

For the past decade, Affinity Marketing Consultants (AMC) administers the use of trademarks for some of North America’s largest Fraternity and Sorority organizations. AMC currently represents 71 Greek organizations and honorary societies which comprise of more than 330,000 students and over 5 million households throughout the United States and Canada.

To be an officially licensed manufacturer or retailer and distribute products and services such as Fraternity & Sorority merchandise, a company must first be approved by the specific organizations to whom the trademarks are used. Licensed vendors must adhere to strict guidelines set forth to assure that products utilize the official colors and logos of each participating Greek organization in the manner they were indented. For this privilege, licensed vendors pay royalties to the respective organization for the right to appropriately use their trademarks. These royalty payments assist the organizations in funding scholarships, programming and exceptional services to their membership.

Educating the membership on the merits of Greek Licensing and instructing them to purchase products from only licensed vendors is paramount to the success of all parties involved. The Greek community firmly opposes any product or design that attempts to glorify alcohol, hazing, sexism, racism or any other image that conflicts with each organization’s mission statement. Each member of the organization has the responsibility to adhere to their group’s regulations regarding licensing and at the same time help police the industry for trademark infringement. Students should and act locally by holding each other accountable to purchase products only from a licensed vendors and globally to insure that their group’s future reputation and branding message is sound.

Getting The Most From Google AdWords

For years, two questions have nagged me: Why would anyone want to buy a pair of corduroy pants? And how can Google’s AdWords technology effectively be used to generate more business for my company? Thank God I had the opportunity to speak to Chris Lindland.

Lindland is the founder of Betabrand, an online retailer that specializes in clothes such as corduroy pants, reversible smoking jackets and disco pants. Lindland uses Google’s AdWords technology to help bring the joy and happiness of his fashions to the masses. AdWords is helping him generate lots of new orders a week.

How has Lindland had so much success with AdWords when many other small businesses, including mine, have not?

For starters, and contrary to what most marketing pundits may say, Lindland views AdWords technology as a short-term rather than a long-term marketing tool. “Look,” he says, “I’m not using AdWords to nurture my customers or build a long-term brand. I’m looking for that guy who just has to have a pair of disco pants and has to have it now.”

Chris doesn’t look at AdWords technology as a way to sell more products. He considers it a way to bring in customers and build a community. Once people find his site, they tend to come back. Many become fans of his Facebook site too. “For anyone looking to play with AdWords technology, it’s important that you first have a database to capture your customers that come to your site.”

Getting names, and more important, e-mail addresses can allow you to build up a database of prospects for future products and special promotions. Lindland says that his e-mail newsletter brings in more sales than AdWords. You can continue to communicate with these people, whether they initially bought from you or not.

AdWords is getting Lindland three to five new orders a day, so he continues to do traditional public relations and marketing, like e-mail and some direct mail. He also gets a lot of sales form word of mouth, referrals and from people who read about his company somewhere else online or in a magazine. So, AdWords should be part of any good marketing plan, but not the entire thing.

Of course, keywords are critical, but smart users of AdWords technology keep them to a minimum. Lindland tested and played with different keywords, but now he’s limiting himself to just a few short phrases, like “corduroy pants” and “smoking jacket.” Lindland suggests that small-business owners keep trying, testing and changing keywords. AdWords even gives you a tool to see how popular certain keywords are. The more general your keywords are, the more page views without clicks you’ll experience and the faster your budget will dry up. So, be as specific as possible.

Lindland also pays a lot of attention to when his AdWords are running. Google lets users suspend their campaigns and then restart them as needed. He found that Sundays during the winter have been the best days for online sales. “That’s because people are sitting around with nothing better to do, and there’s no better time to buy a pair of Karate Casual pants,” Lindland says.

Every good marketer will tell you that metrics are key, and Lindland is no different. He’s a heavy user of Google Analytics. This tool shows him where his customers are coming from, what keywords they’re using to get to him, and how many hits and page views his site gets each day. Google Analytics pulls together activities from all over the Web, including social community sites like Facebook. He can see every website that’s sending him visitors and then target advertising on those websites if he chooses.

Lindland spends a few hours a week looking at these numbers. The most important metric? “Bounce rate,” he says. “That metric tells me how long visitors are staying on my site.” Apparently, people looking for disco pants tend to stay on his site longer than others, and they buy more stuff.

Lindland says he spends between $100 to $300 per day on AdWords. But for me, spending $3,000-$6,000 per month is no small amount. But Lindland didn’t start that way. He kept his budget very low at the beginning until he was comfortable that his efforts were producing some results. He told me to do the same.

Finally, know that using AdWords technology is a complete waste of time if your website isn’t ready. “You need to have a decent landing page, preferably something with a big BUY button on it,” Lindland says. Even for a company like mine that doesn’t sell products online, Lindland advises a landing page should have a big CALL US button on it with an 800 number. He found out the hard way that when visitors were directed to his home page, people would start losing interest if they had to click through a couple of times to find the product they were looking for. So now when a visitor clicks on a link for a smoking jacket, he’s going right to the smoking jacket page.

Because everyone needs a smoking jacket, right?

My guess is that if you are looking at SEO articles you are a beginner to the subject. Here I will show ten easy ways to better optimize your site for search engines. These tips are not only great for beginners but also for experienced webmasters as well. Check out these 10 Search Engine Optimization tips and apply them to your site. Remember, search engines are not a magic bullet! But they are a good way to drive extra targeted traffic to your site. Getting to the top of any search engine doesn’t happen overnight it takes time, patience and hard work.

1.) Great Content

If you spend all your time worrying about ways to get traffic and no time spent working on content your site will never get any where. If your content is good people will voluntarily give you non-reciprocal links. SEO, traffic techniques and every thing else is secondary, your content is why people come to your site. Even if you do a great job getting people through the door, if your content is bad they wont come back.

2.) “Link to Us” and “Add a Link”

Create a “Link to Us” and “Add a Link” page and add them to your site map. This lets other webmasters who may visit your site know that your are open to link exchanges. Also, you want to make it as easy as possible for other people to link to your site. For your link to us page you should give people numerous options ranging from images to text. Give them the HTML code to copy and paste into their site. You should not iclude codes for images that are on your server, this uses up a lot of bandwidth and can even screw up your website stats by showing more unique IP’s than have actually come to your site. Instead display the image and tell people to right click, save as, then upload to their own server.

3.) Links, Links, and More Links

All search engines take into account how many links are pointing to your site on other pages. You should avoid indiscriminate linking to other sites in unrelated fields as well as linking to sites that aren’t indexed in Google, as they may have been penalized and could get your site penalized too. The best way to get back links is to visit sites with a similar topic, look for a “link to us” or similar page, then look for any contact information for that site. Place their links on your page first, then contact the webmaster of the other site telling them you would like to do a link exchange and where they can find their link on your site. Then ask for a reciprocal link and give them your link info. You should avoid sending your link info in html format because some webmasters don’t like that. Instead tell them your page TITLE, URL, and DESCRIPTION

4.) Don’t Optimize the Wrong Keywords

Your probably thinking that the more times a keyword is searched for the better it is to optimize for that keyword. WRONG! In fact its just about the opposite of that. If you are a new page with little or no page rank its going to be hard to show up for high competition keywords. The best way to decide which keywords to optimize is to divide the number of times that that phrase is searched for by the number of pages that show up for that search on Google. This gives you the search to results ratio. The higher the ratio the better off you are optimizing for that keyword or keyword phrase.

5.) Use a different page title than your URL (homepage only!)

If your homepage URL is “All-About-Horse-Racing.com” you are almost 100% guaranteed to show up as the #1 result for the search “All About Horse Racing”. So why would you want to make that your page title too? If you make your page title “Horse Racing Strategies” you will probably show up for that search as well. Make your page title the exact search phrase you want to show up for. This only works well for your home page, for sub-domains it is a good idea to have your sub domain URL and your page title the same keyword phrase.

6.) Use description meta tags with keyword phrases you want to show up for

In your description meta tag you should use key words and key word phrases you would like to show up for. Your description meta tag and your page title is what a potential visitor sees at search engines.

7.) Use h1, h2, and h3 tags

These tags let search engines know what your most important keywords are. h1 is for your main keywords. h2 and h3 are for your secondary keywords.

8.) Keywords in Unexpected Places

Did you know that search engines don’t only look at the content of your pages for keywords. They also look at your URL, and names of files in your site. Since search engines can’t tell what’s in an image on your site they rely on its alt tag and file name. You can use ANY image for this. Also, put keywords in your URL. All words in URLs and file names should-be-separated-by-dashes.

9.) First and Last Words

Add your desired keyword phrase (only 1 per page!) to the very beginning and end of your page. You are more likely to show up for your desired search phrase if you add it to the beginning and end of your page.

10.) Bold, Underline, Italicize

Out of all the places you can put keywords you can also make certain words or phrases stick out to search engines by emboldening, underlining or italicizing them. However, don’t overdo it. You should not ‘keyword stuff’. Way back when search engines were just starting, they used to only look at how often a keyword phrase was repeated in a page. A lot of pages climbed to the top of the search engines by just repeating the same words over and over. Search engines have long since changed their tactics, now you may even be penalized for “keyword stuffing”, so don’t overdo it.

Create YouTube Video Playlists For MySpace, Facebook, Ipod Etc

If you are like many other MySpace fanatics out there(or Facebook for that matter), you may have run into a problem. You saw some YouTube video you liked and you wanted to put it on your profile or onto your iPod. Currently you only have the ability to put a single YouTube video onto your MySpace profile, but now you can put a whole playlist.

Here is how it works. Use the link which is shown at the bottom of this article. If you don’t already have an account, you will have to sign up. Now you can find YouTube videos using the search box at the top of the page. It will bring back a bunch of results (25 max) and you click on which items you want to add to a playlist. Once you are done, click on the next link at the bottom.

If this is your first time, you will have to select the “Other playlist” option and give it a name. This will create a new playlist for you and add the videos to it. If you already have a playlist setup, you will be able to just select it here.

Once you are finished, you can go into your playlists part of your profile (click on playlists from your dashboard) and select the playlist you want to get the code to put into another website. Now just highlight and copy the text in the textbox and paste it into the website of your choice!
